Stephen Ross Johnson has defended criminal cases in state and federal courts throughout the United States, ranging from complex white-collar financial crimes to death penalty cases. He is a partner with Ritchie, Johnson & Stovall, P.C., and is a criminal defense trial and appellate attorney. Mr. Johnson is the Second Vice President of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL). He is a past-president of the Tennessee Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (TACDL), and the founding past-president and of the Tennessee Innocence Project. He is past president of the Hamilton Burnett Chapter of the American Inns of Court and former Associate General Counsel for the Tennessee Bar Association. In addition to his private practice, Mr. Johnson serves as an adjunct professor at the University of Tennessee College of Law, where he directs the Wrongful Convictions Clinic and, before that, the Innocence Clinic. For many years, he was a CJA panel attorney for the US District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee and the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.
